    Doc went down...

    Tony's trackday today...

    Turn 3...

3rd session of the day and feeling good... Coming into 3 hard on an Orange Kawis butt, turn in and start getting off the brakes and lookin for the apex cone in 4... well the guy in front of me didn't go through 3 as fast as I did and my line was the same as his... I came up on his ass fast and was just on the inside of him so I couldn't go wide, I grabbed a little too much brake while at too much lean and tucked the front.

Ass over tea kettle and bike over Doc. Bent my nice new woodcraft rearsets, smashed my throttle, and BROKE the frame (where the rearsets mount) I am fine, a rashed knee and shoulder, scratched my helmet but no impact and walked my bike back to the pits...

Sat out most of the day and slowly pieced the bike back together, JB Welded my rearset mount point, Had a spare throttle, pop rivited my exhaust back together, bent my rearset back to almost straight and duck taped up my tail a little bit... Passed Tech again and went out for the last session. Defintely slower but I was out there..

I am sore and gonna nurse myself with a few cervaisas, run home tomorrow for some sympathy sex and try to get my bike welded, load the trailer with a few more spares and then I WILL be back for friday practice.

Thanks to all who checked on me at the track. I should know better, First trackday of the year and I was pushing pretty good...

Sorry to hear that, I'm glad you are ok. I will also be seeking sympathy sex. I went down this eve, smashed my bad ass TBR left rearset, shattered my rear cowl and my pride. Bike goes into the shop tomorrow.

If anybody knows where I can find either of those two items I could use the help. The rearset has the two circles cut out of the ankle plate (or whatever it's called). Sort of matching up with the passenger sets.

Be careful out there fellow Hawkers, I have been hearing about waaay too many of us going down.

The Bad news is I scratched my Hord sticker!

Here is my frame tab that broke.

And the throttle/brake lever I had to replace/bend back to shape.

this is about as good of an argument FOR folding pegs that i think anyone needs.
ive never understood why racers, who KNOW they will eventually go down) swap on non-folding pegs....
the only argument ive ever heard is there is some "precision" lost.... but really i think its because they want to move the pegs, and its cheaper/easier for the rearset maker to make a solid mount peg.

atleast its fixable.... you coulda done this:

              Doc,
I'm pretty certain that you want non folding pegs so that in conjunction with the frame sliders it stops the bike sliding along the floor and grinding everything else off!!
Unfortunate that a tab has broken but if it hadn't what else might have got trashed?

i guess what bugs me about it is the frame casting can be overstressed.. if that lug didnt break, that whole casting could crack... then the frame (aka the bike) is junk....
id rather gouge out the tailsection a bit more.

I have never really liked the solid mount footpegs either. When I highsided a month or so ago the bike jumped on me and slid around on top of me before heading on its merry way. I got a nasty gash in my arm that I think was from the folding footpeg. I would hate to think what a solid mount footpeg could have done to me.

                        I warned you.

Couple things about the solid foot peg.

                        1. protects the shifter and rear brake lever (even though I don't use the rear brake)
                        2. The foot peg does not move when you are forcing your leg into the gas tank.
                        3. Protects exhaust a little better.

There are also the down sides.
                        1. Can lift the tires off the ground when really leaned over. Even with aftermarket rear sets. (Racing)
                        2. Skin your leg or bang your shin when loading up truck /trailer

Braking mounting points can happen with either style.

I think that's the first Hordpower sticker that has been rashed! Congrats, Doc!

regarding the footpegs... everything nt650hawk said.

also, i really dont like the way stock pegs move around, i tend to move my feet around when i race and i just dont like the way it feels when i move my foot and i feel the peg move... going back quite a few years (to 1995 to be exact), i bought a 95 gsxr750, rode it a while, had a few electrical issues and traded it in on a 96 gsxr750. after riding the new bike home i went back to the dealer and ordered the footpeg pivot springs for a 95 gsxr. the springs on the 96 were much lighter as a result the pegs moved around a lot... just an example. there's +'s and -'s to everything. it's all personal preference.

and i say this having injured my hawk in a similar, but worse fashion last season at loudon. i ripped both tabs completely off on the same side of the bike, had a welder gob on a bunch of aluminum, filed it flat, drilled it straight through and bolted the rearset back on. it ain't pretty, but it works great and it's a racebike, so who cares.
