    New expert takes 3rd

I have not been on the track until October of last year and this was my inaugural race weekend as an Expert. Nothing but problems putting the hawk together in 1.5 weeks. this is a long story maybe it put something together, later. New gold-valves and undercut trans. Added for this year.

Saturday June 2nd 1st race was GTL ( 20 min race). Never have I participated in this before. I ended up 16 out of 33. not bad considering the competition DUC SS 1000, SUZ SV 650,DUC SS 800, BUELL 1200, DUC SS 800, APR RS 250, KAW EX 500, HON RS 125, YAM YZF 450. I figured I would be near the back of the pack the way my 1 practice prior to the race went.

Sunday June 3rd ULSB Sprint race 8 laps. Practice was a little better after shocking me with what had happened in the GT event the prior day I was able to get a better feel for how the Pirelli slicks would handle. And yes it is much better than D.O.T. race tires I am beginning to find out. I started out on the 4th row B column so I am girded 14th. Green flag (BTW did I mention the HAWK loves dead stop starts) heading into turn 1 in 3rd. Holly S. how did I end up here. is this Amateur or Expert class. 2 people split me on either side. OK, yes this is definitely the Expert class now. Head down now. I end up settling in behind a DUC SS 800 that is worked to the bone. I run him down on the brakes and into the turns and I’m WTFO throttle at the apex and he pulls away getting on the straights. hhhmmmm. O.K. Something needs to change. I sit behind him for a lap to see where his slowest point is. I got it. Coming into turn 3 heavy breaking from 100mph to about 45 to a increasing radius turn. Plan is to give a little distance coming into the braking zone so by the time he has just passed the apex I’ll be 3' from his rear basically crossing from left to right with closing speed to come under him and beat him to the turn 4 apex. I love it when a plan comes together. So now I’m 4th. Happy as can be and pushing the old gal harder and deeper to make room so his HP does not get me. White flag, checkered flag I hold onto 4th 1st week end could no have gone better. Well it did. Come to find out the leader had issues with the engine or blew a tire and I ended up 3rd shut the _ up.

It was a good weekend for all 5 hawks 3 with trophies. SMF got knocked out cold a and will be out of commission for a good month. Wish him well.

I saw a camera man maybe be got some picks of the weekend. Will post if I can find any or link up.

Cold for about 1..5-2 min. Enough to see him not come out of T3, Climb down the trailer get on a pit bike ride on over and see him still for another 15s. He has the biggest bruise on his head that I have ever seen. Like I said before we are glad to still have him here with us He now needs a new lid and a rear set and peg. I have the rearset and footpeg and I think he is going back to Arai and away form Suomy.

            gino,

sounds like some very fine riding. figuring out how to get around similarly paced traffic is a skill indeed. and it sounds like your patience and observations (along with nerve) were well worth it.

            congrats!
